Sanctuary Lake Golf Course is a popular municipal course in the City of Troy, Michigan. The layout, which opened in 2004, spreads out over 190 acres of rolling terrain and enjoys a wide following in southeast Michigan thanks above all to its intriguing links-style playing field, its housing-free setting, its small, tricky greens, and its course conditioning. Sanctuary Lake Golf Course, a Troon-managed facility, is actually the tougher and more varied of Troy s two munis (the other, Sylvan Glen Golf Course, is located three miles away), but it s a layout players of all skill levels can enjoy. The par-71 test features four sets of tee markers that provide distance options from 4,746 yards to 6,554 yards. Though the routing plan is somewhat quirky (the holes jump around and you ll have to double back a couple of times to the next tee), the hilly playing field hooks many players from the very first hole, as it showcases a stunning panoramic view of most of the golf course. In the absence of trees, mounds line the fairways, providing definition to the holes and keeping them separate from each other. Sanctuary Lake Golf Course's turf doesn t yield the run-out of true links courses, but the layout s mounding and fairway undulations make for a fun game and give the course its character. Rough, tall grass, bunkers and wind are the main defenses against par at Sanctuary Lake Golf Course. A few holes require carries over marshy grasses and ponds. The exciting 14th hole features an angled tee shot to a lake-bounded fairway it s all about how much risk you are willing to take on. Sanctuary Lake Golf Course stands out from other munis thanks to its excellent greens. Putting can be an adventure on the small, sloping bentgrass putting surfaces. If you want to warm up before your round, practice facilities include a large driving range, chipping area with sand bunker, and a putting green. The clubhouse features a pro shop and a restaurant.
