Carved through thick forestland and situated beside Lesser Slave Lake, Gilwood Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole public course in Lesser Slave Lake provincial park. Conveniently located close to the town of Slave Lake, the course earns praise for its natural beauty, its intriguing, fun and very challenging layout, and for providing excellent value. Gilwood Golf and Country Club started as a 9-hole layout in 1987 and was updated and expanded to a full 18 in 2005. It is a creation by Les Furber, one of Canada s best known course architects. With four sets of tee markers (plus three additional combo options denoted on the scorecard), Gilwood Golf and Country Club presents differentiated challenges from as short as 5,385 yards up to a full 6,883 yards. After a standard par-36 front nine, the more varied back nine of this par-72 layout features three par 3s, three par 4s, and three par 5s. Each of the holes at Gilwood Golf and Country Club enjoys its own secluded playing corridor in the trees. You ll be totally immersed in nature and likely see some wildlife. Accurate shotmaking is a must on the tree-lined straightaway and dogleg par 4s and 5s. Keeping the ball in the fairway and out of the thick woods is the principal challenge. There s little leeway for errant shots. Water also threatens the swing on seven holes. Les Furber Design inserted bunkers into the fray strategically at Gilwood Golf and Country Club. You ll notice them more prominently by the greens. The multi-tiered putting surfaces are challenging with distinct zones to accommodate a variety of pin positions. Gilwood Golf and Country Club's practice facilities include a grass driving range and a putting green. The clubhouse features a well-stocked pro shop and a grill restaurant.
