Inspired by the Scottish, English and Irish seaside links courses, the Starboard Course at Harborside International Golf Center is one of the Chicago area's premier golf layouts. The second course at this wonderful municipal facility, Harborside opened in 1996 and was designed by Dick Nugent, who also crafted the original course at Harborside, the Port Course. The Starboard Course, which has no trees, lots of bunkers, tall fescue and superb conditions, has four sets of tees, playing 4,150 yards to 7,166 yards from the tips. The no. 1 handicap hole is actually the first hole, a long par 5 with a series of bunkers leading up to the green. Many of the holes have very large or very long bunkers, both in the fairways or around the greens. The signature hole is the 17th, called "Buccaneers Cove." The hole requires a middle iron for most players to carry a piece of Lake Calumet, which is prevalent from tee to green and up the right side of this angled green. Three deep bunkers on the left means there's no bailout. Both courses at Harborside are also served by one of the best practice facilities in the Midwest. It includes course-like conditions, a driving range with target greens, practice bunker, chipping and pitching green, and practice putting greens. Harborside also offers top notch instruction for anyone seeking a lesson. There's also an expansive golf shop with the latest in apparel, accessories and equipment. Also inside the 20,000 square-foot clubhouse is The Pier at Harborside, a restaurant that offers American favorites like wings, wraps, salads, Angus beef burgers and a selection of beverages.
