Devonport offers a course to appeal to golfers of all abilities. Even some of the greatest professional players have found the layout to be a challenge when presented at its toughest for prestigious championship events.
Designed by Vern Morcom, who was also responsible for the Royal Hobart course, the Devonport layout is a par 70 that measures 5,947 metres for the men’s course. A par 74 measures 5,306 metres for the ladies, who benefit from an extra shot on the 1st, 6th, 11th and 15th, playing this quartet of holes as par-5s. All areas of the game are examined and, while the course is reasonably tight in places, in others it offers the opportunity to recover and still save par after errant shots. Generally, though, it favours the straight hitter and the golfer who thinks about their shots and their choice of club over those who simply like to see how far they can hit the ball. Everyone will have their own favourite hole, but among the most memorable is the delightful par-3 ninth right in front of the clubhouse
